If you don’t want others to be able to access certain files, hiding them isn’t a very efficient means of protecting against unauthorized access. Encrypting or storing them in an encrypted container is the best way to go about it. And this is where Cryptic Disk comes in. You can use this application to create encrypted containers and securely store all the files you want inside those containers.

Cryptic Disk can be installed on machines powered by anything from Windows XP SP1 up to Windows 8. Getting the encryption software up and running is a standard process: download an installer, run it, then click through the instructions presented by a setup wizard. The whole thing will take little of your time, and that is quite nice.

Cryptic Disk features a Windows Explorer-like interface, meaning you will immediately feel at home with the application. The containers you created are conveniently placed on the panel to the right on the interface. A list of Basic Tasks, access to the Wizard, and Info on a selected container are presented in the panel to the left. At the top there’s a traditional File Menu and a toolbar with buttons for various functions Cryptic Disk can perform.

There are three Cryptic Disk editions to choose from: Home, Professional, and Ultimate Edition. The Home Edition has to following functionality to offer: create encrypted containers (a wizard will help you quickly do so), virtual keyboard for password entry, support for AES encryption, automatic recovery of access settings for encrypted disks, portable mode, protection from brute force attacks, hot keys. Please note that the hotkeys are not available when using the demo version and that when using the demo to create an encrypted container, you can only use the “demo” password.

Using Cryptic Disk is a fairly simple process. First up, you must create an encrypted container. The nice thing here is that a wizard will guide you through the process. Access to the container is password protected. Mount the container and you can access all the files you stored on it. Unmount the container and the files stored on it cannot be accessed anymore.

Make sure you and you alone can access your private files by securely storing them in an encrypted container created with Cryptic Disk.

Pros

Installing Cryptic Disk on a Windows PC is a simple process. You will immediately feel at home with Cryptic Disk’s Explorer-like interface. A wizard will help you create encrypted containers. Securely store any files you want in said containers. There are three Cryptic Disk versions to choose from.

Cons

The Home edition features the least amount of features. The demo doesn’t allow you to change the password for accessing encrypted containers; it does not allow you to use hotkeys either.
